KapFind works without a server. There is no infrastructure behind the app: no account, no database, no analytics service. This page therefore mostly describes what does not happen.
What the app does not collect
No data is passed on to the publisher or to any third party. There is no advertising identifier, no tracker, no usage statistics, no automatic crash reporting. The app contains no third-party analytics or advertising software development kit.
What travels, and where
Three things travel, only between the phones of the same group, over Bluetooth:
- the name and colour you choose when you first open the app;
- your position, if and only if you have turned on sharing;
- the messages you write in the group's messaging.
These exchanges are encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a key derived from the group code. A device that does not have the code cannot open them, even if it relays them.
Relaying
To cover a site larger than one Bluetooth range, a device may retransmit encrypted data belonging to groups other than its own. It cannot read their content: it does not hold the key. Nothing is kept beyond the time needed for retransmission.
What is kept on your phone
The name, the colour and the code of the current group, in the app's private storage. Positions and messages live only in memory: they disappear when the app is closed. Leaving the group erases the code and the position.
Deleting your data
There is no account to delete, and nothing to ask us for: we hold nothing. Leaving the group erases the code and the position; uninstalling the app erases the rest, that is, the name and the colour. No copy remains anywhere else.
Permissions
- Location — to calculate the distance and direction to group members. It is only sent if you turn on sharing, and only to your group. On Android, it is also required by the system to use Bluetooth on versions earlier than Android 12.
- Bluetooth — the app's only transport.
- Persistent notification (Android) — to keep the radio active while the app is in use.
- Notifications — to let you know about a received message or the group going out of range. They are produced by your phone, never sent from a server.
Children
KapFind is not specifically aimed at children and collects no data concerning them, or concerning anyone else.
Changes
Any change to this policy will be published on this page, with its update date. As the app has no accounts, there is no other way to notify you.
