How to join a group

Someone creates the group and gets a six-letter code. Everyone types in the same code. That's all: no invitation, no account, no approval. The code is made to be said out loud — the alphabet leaves out characters that get mixed up in the noise.

You have to keep the screen on

Yes, and that's the price of working without a network: iOS and Android both cut the radio of an app that has gone to sleep. KapFind is a mode you switch on when you're looking for someone, not an app that runs all night in your pocket.

What's the range?

Count on 30 to 80 metres per hop, more in open ground. Beyond that, the phones in between relay: three hops are enough to cross a site as soon as there are enough people — and at a festival, that's guaranteed.

I can't see anyone

• Check that everyone has typed in the same code.
• Check that Bluetooth is turned on in Settings, and not switched off from Control Center: iOS then says “Bluetooth connections will be available as long as Settings is open”, and the app sees nothing.
• Allow the Bluetooth and location permissions. Without location, the app can't work out a direction.
• Keep the screens on, on both sides.

What about the watch?

The Apple Watch app installs along with the iPhone app. It shows the group — radar, names, messages — but Bluetooth stays in the phone: an Apple Watch can't make itself visible to the group over Bluetooth. So it needs the iPhone nearby. There is no Wear OS app.

Delete my data

There's no account, and we hold nothing. Leaving the group erases the code and the position; uninstalling the app erases the name and the colour. See the privacy policy.
